18/11/2006 Hoylake meteors 2 Wirral rangers storm 1
Goals: Alex Jones 2
Man of the Match: Alex Jones
Squad: Neville Whate Mccrudden Lucas Mclleland Stone Haworth Richardson A Jones
This was a great game of football. Early on Rangers where looking strong but for an excellent first half performance by Harry Whate filling in at the back who read the game well and made some excellent saving tackles. Meteors then started to take control with some good passing football, particulary Sam Richardson and Alex Jones both linking up well out wide on the left. It was Alex who broke the deadlock, the ball broke to him after some strong Hoylake pressure on the Rangers goal, he then managed to slot the ball in off the far post from a near impossible angle! Half time: 1-0 Meteors.
Rangers equalised early in the second half with a shot that no one saw coming. This led to an even and, exciting second half. With 3 minutes to go Alex Jones broke through again with a great run, then one on one with the keeper and everyones hearts in mouths he buried it in the top left hand corner !! A fantastic finish and that was game over. One of the Meteors best performances of the season. 2-1 Meteors
Match 2
03/10/07 Meteors 1 Upton 1
Squad Haste,Lamb,Lucas,Mcrudden,Mclelland,Whate,Stone,Haworth,A Jones,Neville,Richardson.
MOTM H. Whate
Scorer: Callum Stone
It had been a long time since the last game, so we took the full squad of 11 as they where all desperate for a run out. We where up against an Upton side who had won all 6 of there league games, so we were expecting a tough match. Hoylake started the better of the sides with Callum and Harry linking well in midfield and Dom making a nuisance of himself up front. We just struggled a bit to really test their keeper in the early stages. At the other end Joe Lamb was superb. Upton had a classy winger but he could not get past Joe. Ht 0 -0.
Second half saw lots of changes to the team. Matty volunteered to go in goal, allowing Joe a run outfield. Again another even half, Upton scored first a highly controversial goal. The ball squeezed under Matty and spun on the line, the ref gave the goal and he was probably right. The boys kept their heads up getting a couple of shots on target and with 3 minutes to go Callum followed up on a loose ball after a save from their keeper and banged it in the net. With not long left the boys battled hard to keep it solid at the back. A very pleasing result against a tough Upton side.
Match 3
10/03/2007 - Hoylake Meteors 1 Glenavon Hawks 2
Squad: Stone,Mcrudden,Mclelland,Neville,Whate,Haworth,Lucas,Richardson
Motm: Jack Howarth
The Meteors were up against a tough Glenavon side. After an even 5 minutes Glenavon took the lead, the ball came over from the left and everyone looked at each other and did not bother to clear the ball and it bobbled over the line. It was a sloppy goal to let in. Hoylake fought back minutes later, a corner was poorly cleared and it fell to Harry on the edge of the box and he unleashed a great shot in to the top corner of the net. Half Time 1-1.
Second half Harry went in goal and Matty filled in at right back. It was a good half of even well fought football, played in a good spirit. Harry was tested a couple of times but made some good saves. Pushing hard, Hoylake were looking good for a winner with Jack and Dom linking up well. Sam Richardson was providing some lovely long passes, but with 3 minutes to go Glenavon squeezed the ball over the line in a mad scramble. Hoylake did not deserve to lose as it was such an even game and the boys worked extremely hard.
Match 4
17/03/2007 - Meteors 0 Olympic 1
Squad Haste, Lucas, Mcleland, Lamb, Stone, Whate, Richardson, A Jones, Haworth.
Motm Callum Stone
It was going to be hard going today as the wind was howling and the grass could have done with a cut. The Meteors where up against an Olympic team that we had beaten earlier on in the season.Hoylake started the better and passed the ball round well with Harry and Sam particularly linking up well together. The best chance of the first half came when Jack very nearly got on the end of a Sam cross after a lovely break from the back.
In the second half Hoylake dominated possession, Callum looking lively up front as we changed to a 2 2 2 formation to try and grab the winner. We had chances galore, Josef and Sam both shooting just wide and Callum had a header which rolled along the line and was cleared by a defender. Then with 5 minutes to go Olympic had a rare break and managed to squeeze the ball over the line as we struggled to get a body behind the ball.Hoylake pressed hard for an equaliser but it wouldn’t come.
A good match and even the ref said “Hoylake were by far the better side”.
Match 5
Cup Match Meteors 1 Wirral Rangers Thunder 0 (After Extra Time)
Motm Callum Stone
Squad Haste, Lamb, Mcrudden, A Jones, Whate, Richardson, Stone, Neville, Mclelland,
The Meteors were hopeful of a first round cup win as they had been passing the ball round beautifully in previous weeks. From the first few minutes they dominated possession, the midfield passing and movement was again very good. Sam Richardson out wide on the right was excellent on numerous occasions he beat his man and put a great ball in the box we just failed to convert our chances of plenty, shots went close from Joe and Calum.Ht 0-0.
Second half was more of the same with lots of Hoylake attacks, Harry went close with a header from a corner, and a goal had to come soon. Rangers broke a few times but our defence were there every time, except on one occasion when they got through and Joseph saved brilliantly with his legs to keep us in the game.Ft 0-0.
Extra time was here, 5 minutes each way and penalties were looming but we didn’t want it to come to that, ten more minutes to find that goal. It was always going to have to be something special after the amount of chances that we had made and it was, Harry came free just inside the half way line and unleashed a shot that dipped just under the cross bar, the keeper got his hands to it but couldn’t keep it out. One nil at last. With only 5 minutes remaining Hoylake had a couple of other good chances and didn’t look too threatened at the back.
Nice to get through to the second round all the team played well and we very much deserved the win after creating so many chances.
Match 6
Cup Round 2 Meteors 3 Delta Rangers 1 after Extra Time
Squad Haste,Mcrudden,Lamb,Whate,Haworth,Stone,Mclelland,Neville,A Jones, Richardson.
Goals Dominic Neville, Callum Stone, OG
Motm Harry Whate
Meteors were after revenge as Delta had beaten them in an earlier cup 3-0, so they knew it was going to be a difficult encounter. With 10 boys it was hard for the coaches with lots of rotation but plenty of fresh legs. It was an even start with both teams passing the ball well. Joe was tested a couple of times but looked solid as did all of our defenders Joe, Matty and Nathan.Ht 0-0.
Early on in the second half delta broke and shot, Joe saved well but the ball fell to an on coming player who followed up well. 0-1.After last week’s great cup win the boys were showing a fighting spirit and Delta were beginning to tire. Dom broke wide on the left and shot from way out. It hung in the wind and dipped under the bar, the keeper could do nothing ,an excellent goal ,1-1.from then on we looked the stronger side creating good chances, Harry headed just wide from one of Sams brilliant corners. Full time 1-1.
Extra time 5 minutes each way just like last week, nervous looking coaches and parents. Delta broke and shot, Joe saved brilliantly with his legs to keep us in the game. From then on we looked the stronger side.Callum managed to poke the ball over the line for his 6th goal of the season, 2-1 Hoylake. Delta’s heads had dropped and we created lots of chances, Sam putting some great balls in the box and linking well with Harry. Their keeper saved well from Callum, Dom, Harry and Alex. Then Dom crossed a ball from the left it struck a defender and flew in the goal, 3-1 Hoylake. With 2 minutes to go we had the game won and were still making good chances. A great comeback I think the Meteors like extra time.
Last 8 of the cup here we come!!
Match 7
14th April Cup Semi Final
hoylake Meteors 1 Victoria Colts 2 (after extra time)
Squad: Haste, Lamb, Lucas, Mcrudden, Whate, Mclelland, Stone, Richardson, Haworth, Neville, A Jones.
Motm: Harry Whate
The Meteors were up against a strong Victoria side, could we beat them and reach the last 4 in the cup, after 2 great previous wins in the cup both going to extra time anything was possible. With all 11 players available there was going to be a lot of changes made. Hoylake started the better of the sides, Jack working very hard out wide on the left. Harry had a couple of shots early on, both testing the Victoria keeper.
Victoria began to show why they are one of the best sides in the league with some neat passing, they had 2 skilful wingers and our defenders Joe, Nathan and Matty had their work cut out but all played well, when Victoria did get through Josef was on hand making a string of excellent saves.Ht 0-0.
Second half was all about chances on goal, most of them falling to Hoylake, Alex and Sam both going close. Numerous lovely corners from the sweet foot of Sam caused havoc, with Victoria’s defenders playing brilliantly to clear up. Against the run of play we fell a goal behind. This did not seem to bother the Meteors as they had fought back form a goal down in the previous 2 matches. Sure enough the ball fell to goal machine Calum who half volleyed, the ball nestled into the back of the net 1-1. With 5 minutes to go there good chances at both ends, Josef yet again keeping us in the match with a brilliant save, and Victoria clearing from their own goal line.
Extra time for the third game in succession, penalties loomed again. It was as tight as the first 30 minutes but Victoria broke and scored a spectacular unstoppable winner. 2-1 down and time just ran out.
A great performance from all 11 players giving there all throughout, Calum was excellent but Harry stood out for man of the match making good chances, running constantly and making some great last ditch defensive tackles, he really is in great form.
Disappointed to lose a match we probably deserved to win, but yet again very proud of a team who did not give up and gave their all.
Match 8
Sat 28th April Cup Round 2 Meteors 4 Olympic 4 aet lost 1-0 on pens
Squad Neville, Mcrudden, Whate, Lamb, Haworth, Lucas, Mclelland, Stone, Richardson.
Motm: Joe Lamb
Goals: Joe Lamb 4
We had won one and lost one against Olympic but the way the Meteors had been playing in previous weeks we were hopeful of a good result. It didn’t quite start the way we had planned, falling 2 down early on, but we by no means looked out of the game. We made a drastic change in an attempt to get back in the game with a very attacking midfield. Joe Lamb moved from defence to striker and it paid off within a minute, Joe rifled in a goal Ht 1-2.
We knew we could get back into the game and we did in fantastic style, 3 more goals were to come all from the boot of Joe, 4-3 up at one stage Olympic battled back to make it 4-4 at full time. The parents and players are more than used to extra time now as this was the fourth game in a row that this had occurred. Two very quiet halves followed, with neither side looking capable of scoring. Penalties!! Joe, Harry, Calum, Dom and Nathan all very bravely volunteered to take them, with Dom in goal it was a tense few minutes. Everyone had their shot well saved and Dom made 4 good saves, the Olympic keeper stepped up and banged one in the top corner, Olympic were through. What a game, real end to end stuff, the boys did brilliant to fight back the way they did. Wow 4 goals from Mr Lamb!!
Match 9
May 12th Meteors 0 Delta Colts 1
Squad Neville, Lamb, Mccrudden, Haste, Whate, Stone, Richardson, Haworth, A Jones,
Motm: Dom Neville.
Our last game of the season and we were up against a well respected Delta side. It was a tight first half with both teams enjoying good possession. On the couple of times Delta got through our strong defence of Matty and Joe, Domo was well alert in goal. We passed the ball in midfield with Harry, Calum and Sam linking well together as ever. Our best chance of the half fell to Jack and Alex who both had shots well saved by the lively Delta keeper, Ht 0-0.
Second half Joe went in goal and was tested early on but saved well from a long range shot. We fell a goal behind a few minutes later; a corner was cleared but fell to an on coming Delta midfielder who shot through a crowded area, 0-1. We pressed and pressed for an equaliser with Sam running wild out wide he took on three players and crossed brilliantly but Calum’s shot just went over the bar. Jack had a long range shot well saved. We created chance after chance but just couldn’t find the back of the net.
A good game of football as Delta were a decent outfit, we just missed too many chances in front of goal.
