10's Comets Match Reports
Hoylake u10 comets 0 wirral panthers 1
Squad: Williams Gale Corkhill E Jones Smith Eyre-Jones Plante Mcdonnell Allen Ralph
Man of The Match: Joe Ralph
It was bitterly cold and this game had 0-0 written all over it. The Comets passed the ball round well but struggled to get the ball near the Wirral goal. Wirral had the better chances in the first hal but some excellent defending by Joe Ralph and a few good saves from Luke Williams kept them at bay, Ht 0-0.
Second half was similar to the first, a fairly even game. Comets had made some better chances with their best coming from a Toby Plante shot that slipped through the keepers hands but stopped on the line in a very muddy goal mouth! With 3 minutes to go and everyone thinking a draw was not a bad result, Panthers managed a shot which sneaked past a static Luke in goal.
A bit disappointing as the Comets had played well against a strong Panthers team who themeslves were in a good run of form. Comets just failed to pressure the opposing goal enough.
Match 2
Comets 0 Glenavon Eagles 0 Mar 3rd
Squad : E Jones , Ralph , Gale ,Eyre-Jones, Allen, Corkhill, Williams
MOTM J Ralph
With a couple of players missing the comets had the bare 7, so we new it was going to be a hard tiring game against a strong in form Glenavon side.
It was a pretty even game all the way through.Glenavon found it difficult to get through a strong defence of the excellent Joe Ralph and Billy Gale. On the odd occasion when they did get through Euan in goal was always on hand.
Our midfielders Ben, Joe and Sam battled tirelessly and linked up well together, Joe Corkhill had an excellent first half. A good chance was missed when a long ball over the top found Luke, he managed to get on the end of the bouncing ball, but put it just wide. With just a few minutes left we had our closest effort. Luke found Sam out wide he cut in side and shot inches wide of the post. A very pleasing performance with a great effort put in by all the team.
Match 3
Saturday 10th March Hoylake U10 Comets 0 Wirral Rangers Thunder 0
Squad: Eyre Jones,Williams,E Jones,Corkhill,Ralph,Gale,Plante,Smith,Allen
Motm: Joe Ralph
After last weeks well fought out goalless draw, the Comets were looking for another good result. For the first five minutes possession was swapping regularly in the middle of the park. Then Hoylake took over and dominated the rest of the half with some neat passing play. Joe Corkhill similar to last week looked in great form.Hoylakes best chance of the half came to Ben, the ball came out to him on the edge of the area ,he fired a shot through a crowed box and it just clipped the outside of the post. Billy also went close in a goal mouth scramble.
In the second half Hoylake enjoyed lots of possession but the passing had disappeared, they struggled with the wind against them. Joe Ralph had the best chances in the second half surging forward twice and unleashing shots that both missed narrowly.Hoylake dominated play having numerous corners but just failed to find the net.Euan in goal was rarely tested but cleared up anything that came his way.
A pleasing performance for the fact that we kept another clean sheet, but we need to start finding some goals!!
Match 4
Comets 0 Victoria Colts 2 Mar 17th
Squad E Jones, Gale, Mcdonell, Smith, Williams, Corkhill, Allen
Motm: Billy Gale
With a couple of players missing it was going to be tough game against a very tough Victoria side. For the first 10 minutes we only had 6 players, Victoria’s manager insisted on playing his full 7 which was a little unsporting. We fell 1 down after 5 minutes and soon after it was 2, a lovely chipped cross was nodded in, a great goal that Euan could do nothing about.
The second half was a much more even affair, we held our own at the back, Billy in particular played well and we had better possession. Will was keeping the ball well but we just failed to get the right passes in.Hoylake did go close a couple of times through Euan.
It was a very good battling performance from all the boys.
Match 5
Comets 0 Delta Rangers 0
Motm Elliot Mcdonell
Squad E Jones, Williams, Gale, Ralph, Smith, Plante, Mcdonell, Eyre Jones.
The Comets were up against a Delta side that had beaten the Meteors 3-0 in an earlier match, so it was going to be a difficult game. With Joe C and Sam not available we were down to 8 players.Euan played the first half in goal and Luke the second.Hoylake started the game the better, with good possession but lacking in goal opportunities. It was a good even half mainly fought in midfield neither team particularly looking like scoring .Ht 0-0.
In the second half going forward Hoylake were looking more dangerous inspired by good work from Toby. It was end to end stuff, Luke pulling off a good diving save to his right. Our best chance of the game fell to Toby who broke through and managed to race past a defender but his shot was very well saved by the Delta keeper.
Great to have another clean sheet that’s 3 in 4 weeks. With the defence looking very solid and both keepers in good form.
Match 6
Cup Round 2 Comets 2 Mersey Athletic 0
Squad E Jones, Williams, Eyre Jones, Gale, Ralph, W Smith, C Smith, Plante Corkhill,
Goals Joe Ralph, Ben Eyre Jones
Motm Calum Smith
It was a nice sunny morning and the boys all seemed in top spirits, in particular Callum who was making his debut. Hoylake’s neat passing had Mersey in trouble as early as the first few minutes, with Hoylake getting the ball forward on many occasions. After about 10 minutes Joe Ralph broke from the back with a surging strong run and unleashed a shot from outside the area, it dipped under the bar, a great goal 1-0 Hoylake.Mersey responded well a long ball was played over the top ,their striker ran on to it but just squeezed it over the bar,Euan had done enough to put him off. H-T 1-0.
Second half Hoylake continued their domination, some good passing was undoing the Mersey defence, Calum who was exceptional in his first ever match had a shot well saved.Hoylake’s second goal came from a free kick after a Mersey defender had handled just outside the area.Ben stepped up with dad and coach Gary yelling “shoot shoot shoot” from the touchline. He did and curled it into the top right hand corner, another good goal 2-0 Hoylake. Two minutes later we had another great chance when from a corner Euan shot and hit the bar. Mersey didn’t have too many chances, their best came when Luke had to dive low and push it on to the post with our defence clearing in a mad scramble.Hoylake continued to make good chances and were worthy winners in the end.
Last 8 of the cup here we come!!
Match 7
14th April Cup Semi Final Comets 0 Beechwood A 1
Squad:- Williams, Eyre-Jones, E Jones, C Smith, W Smith, Allen, Gale, Mcdonnell, Plante, Corkhill.
Motm Elliot Mcdonnell
The Comets were hoping to do better than their previous 0-0 against Beechwood and reach the last 4 of the cup, with 10 players available on a very warm day, Hoylake didn’t seem awake. The normal fluent passing was non existent. Euan made 4 or 5 saves in the first half and Ben had to clear off the line. At half time the players got a roasting, did they want to win? Yes was their response! But our second half performance wasn’t much better. Luke in goal, being called upon just as much as Euan had been in the first half. Eventually Beechwood slotted home a shot, in off the post giving Luke no chance. At last the Comets showed a bit of fight.Euan broke dangerously on a couple of occasions, our best chance coming from one of his crosses but Toby just failed to get a toe on it. Elliot and Joe C battled well in midfield but overall a disappointing performance creating very little. The boys seemed lack lustre in the heat.
Match 8
Sat 21st April Comets 1 Wallasey Wanderers 3
Squad: E Jones, Williams, Eyre-Jones, W Smith, C Smith, Corkhill, Allen, Ralph, Mcdonell,
Motm: Calum Smith
Goal: Joe Ralph
The two previous encounters with Wallasey had been one win and one loss, so we were expecting a tight game. For the first 5 minutes Hoylake looked good, they were passing the ball round neatly, Will, Calum and Sam linked well together. Our best chance of the half fell to Sam, he turned his man and made room for a good shot that was well saved by the Wallasey keeper. Soon after Wallasey got more into the game, they broke quickly and caught our defence out with their pace and slotted home a good goal from a tight angle. H-T 0-1.
Wallasey began the second half as well as they had finished the first, keen for more goals and they soon came, two of them. The first came when our defenders gifted them a goal and the second was a follow up from a strong shot that had been parried by Luke and our defenders didn’t act quick enough to clear it, 3-0 down.
Hoylake did battle back well and Joe Ralph scored an excellent goal taking on two players and shooting from a tight angle. 3-1. We continued to work well for the last 5 minutes, Will and Joe linking well together but no more goals came.
A disappointing result mainly down to poor defending, but a better overall performance than previous weeks.
Match 9
Tues May 1st Cup Quarter Final Comets 0 Gleanvon Hawks 0 aet. Pens 2-1
Squad: E Jones, Eyre-Jones, Williams, Gale, Plante, Allen, C Smith, W Smith, Corkhill.
Motm: Euan Jones
Glenavon are a tough and well organised side and this was to be a big test for us. Could we make the semi finals for the first time? We started well with some neat passing and a couple of near misses in the first half, the same was to be said for Glenavon, but they went a bit closer, Euan was commanding in goal. Ht 0-0.
In the second half we didn’t manage to create as much, although we did keep the ball well. Glenavon pushed more and more as the time ticked by but Ben was excellent at the back along with Joe and Billy and the midfielders tracked back well. Ft 0-0.
Extra time followed a similar pattern but neither team could find a winner. Penalties, a first for the Comets, tension was high. Comets first to take and Calum rammed it in the corner. Glenavon then missed their first, giving us the upper hand. Sam also slotted home well. Euan was to make 3 excellent saves and it finished 2-1 to Hoylake. The boys went wild! A great battling performance against a very good side. A first for this age group reaching the semi finals of a cup in 4 years.
Match 10
5th May Cup Semi Final Comets 1 Peninsular Stars 2
Squad: E Jones, Eyre-Jones, Gale, Corkhill, W Smith, C Smith, Plante, Allen, Williams, Mcdonell,
Goal: Toby Plante
Motm: Euan Jones
A first for the under tens reaching the semi finals of the cup. Today in bright sunshine we faced one of the best teams on the Wirral, in the shape of Peninsular Stars. They were a very big strong looking side and within minutes Euan had to dive at the striker’s feet and collected the ball well. A couple of minutes later we fell a goal behind when an unstoppable shot dipped under the bar, 0-1. We got back into the game with some good possession and passing and pressed really well. Our equaliser came when Ben swept a corner into the box and Toby pounced on it, 1-1. The rest of the half was evenly contested with both teams pressing forward. Ht1-1.
Second half we struggled to keep the ball and came under a lot of pressure. Euan made some excellent saves, his best tipping over a long range shot brilliantly. We hung on, but with only two minutes to go Peninsular found a winner.
A good scoreline against a very good side.
Match 11
Sat 28th April Cup Round 2
Comets 1 Future Stars 0
Squad. E Jones, Williams, Eyre Jones, W Smith, C Smith, Gale, Plante, Allen, Ralph,
Motm Toby Plante
Goal Calum Smith
Comets were in for a hard game as Future Stars had beaten them earlier in the season 2-0. Comets started brightly passing the ball around nicely, having lots of possession but not quite testing the keeper much. Ht 0-0.
Second half followed a similar pattern but we were now testing the keeper more often, we were in control. Eventually Hoylake won a penalty for a hand ball ,Will stepped up and hit a hard shot but the keeper saved well, The Future side were celebrating but the ball stayed in play, Calum gave chase and turned it back into the mixer from the bye line and it looped in the goal, his first goal for the club. Hoylake stayed on top for the rest of the game. The refs watch seemed to have stopped as the game went on and on but we stayed on top and kept the ball well, with Toby having a couple of good chances. A much improved display by the Comets with some great passing football.
Match 12
Sat 12th May Comets 3 New Brighton Saints 0
Squad E Jones, Williams, Gale, Eyre Jones, W Smith, C Smith, Corkill, Plante, Mcdonnell.
Goals Plante 2, E Jones,
Motm:Toby Plante.
Our last league game of the season was against a saint’s side, which we had beaten earlier in the season 1-0. We dominated from the minute we kicked off, with Calum running rings round everyone in midfield. Three good chances fell to Luke in the first few minutes with one brushing the post and two well saved. Calum also had a shot that just went wide. Euan was called upon once in the first half, tipping over brilliantly. It was rare that saints could get past Ben, Billy or Joe at the back who were all solid.Ht 0-0.
Second half we knew the goals would come; they did two falling to Toby his first was a impressive finish, dinked over the keeper and his second a shot buried in the corner. The comets were playing lovely football, Will, Elliot and Calum in midfield threading clever passes, creating lots of chances. Luke was tested once in the half diving low to make a good save. Our third goal came from Euan, a great finish for his first of the season.
A great performance for the last mini soccer game for the Comets.
