End of an era under 16s comets

The close of the 2016/17 season saw the end of an era for AC Hoylake, as one of the club’s longest running and most successful teams played its final campaign.

There were emotional scenes at this year’s presentation day, as the final set of awards and medals were handed out to the under 16s Comets team, who ended the season as Eastham Middle Cup winners.

A team 10 years in the making

This Comets team first kicked off ten years ago, when Gordon Harrison started up an under 6s team, ably assisted by Lee Robinson for the most part, and more recently by Aaron Woods, who has been assisting for the last three years. Billy Johnson was also a huge help at training, when called upon.

And a handful of those players who started out as six-year-olds, stuck with the Comets right through to last season, picking up their fair share of silverware along the way.

It’s no exaggeration to say that this Comets team is one of the best in their age group, and one of the club’s most successful – a notable highlight coming in the 2013/14 season, when they won the Wallasey Junior League and the Wallasey Challenge cup, to clinch a memorable double.

Everyone at AC Hoylake would like to say a huge thank you to Gordon, Lee, Aaron and Billy, as well as all the parents who’ve helped make the Comets a success over the last ten years – it was fitting the should bow out with a final trophy win in their final season.

And thanks to all the players who have represented the club and its values to such a high standard – we wish them all the very best of luck to everyone in their footballing future, especially those going on to join other clubs at youth level.
