Great team performance
We didn't know what to expect
Having not played Phoenix previously we didn't know what to expect. Following team recruitment due to a number of previous players leaving the team and having not played any friendlies or even trained as a full squad we weren't even sure what we were capable of.
However it was soon clear that the 'new' lads were much stronger than those who decided to leave the team to go on to 'better things' and the team were in control throughout. With a very strong back line, new captain and a reinforced midfield the team were a pleasure to watch.
The passing was excellent and the communication that has been missing so much in previous seasons was a joy to hear.
The goals were plentiful, so much so it is to difficult to recall who scored in what order but it was very encouraging that the goals came from numerous positions Liam McEvoy (3) courtesy of 2 penalties, Ben McEvoy (no relation and a new recruit) (2), Jonny Corkhill (1) even with his mop!, Connor Francom who deserved so many more but scored with a great header from a corner, Joe Snellgrove (1) but could have had more had he not felt sorry for the other team but he should feel more than a bit embarrassed for one of his shocking misses, Ben Hodges (2) and Tom Sanford (3) a hat-trick on his debut with the final goal coming from a Phoenix OG.
It could have been many more but it was a fair result with complacency playing it's part for Phoenix to get a consolation goal.
All in all a great game to watch and finally, even the Ginger Ninja didn't have anything negative to say !!
Man of the Match went to Ben McEvoy although there were half a dozen contenders.
We were top of the table at the start of the day thanks to alphabetical order but hopefully we have stayed there.
Hopefully we will recruit 1 or 2 new faces in the coming weeks but we have turned down Coutinho hence him crying whilst on international duty with Brazil :)
