Hoylake Meteors vs Groves
Meteors 1, Groves 2
‘CHARIOTS OF MINI-LEAGUE ON FIRE”
Man of the match Seb
for a stupendous effort, team work and skill
The Meteors playing like an away team in Europe for the first time in unfamiliar territory, strange languages and a larger than life pitch. A new setting for our boys, a pitch resembling and feeling like a billiard table with a sprinkling of coarse Tenerife sand at the infamous Bebington Oval, of and a welcome dose of early Spring sunshine to nudge the needle over the 10-degree mark. This was the mini-league football athletics, a true endurance test in this fastmoving arena.
1/4 - G=Otto, D= Daniel & Philip, F= Luca & Jake
A nice handshake for players and coaches set the friendly scene for a post Valentines special. An early Meteors roll out from Otto to Philip to Luca and back to Philip. Philip trying a Luke special turn on the ball with profound effect to pass up front to Jake. Jake’s fast pace stopped by Groves defence. Daniel shining through with some influential defending, taking 3 on at a time and pushing the ball back up to Luca and Jake. No10 flying down with devastating effect, breaking through a screamer to be psyched out by Otto appearing 3 times his usual size in goal. Luca & Jake tried but couldn’t breakdown the Groves defence.

2/4 - G=Luca, D= Otto& Seb, F=Philip & Fin
A real pancake flipping game, end to end, Fin & Philip strike team shut down with each run by a quick forming defence battery. Otto refusing entry to the “not so gentle giant” No5 who was twice Otto’s size. Seb to super sub Jake, back across to Seb big shot on target forcing Groves goalie into a flying save. Seb setting up for Fin and running back to help Otto. No5 broke through to be swooped up by Luca in goal. Toe to toe all the time.

3/4 - G=Daniel, D=Luca & Seb, F=Jake & Otto
This time a more successful Meteors Fireball rolled out from Daniel to Luca up the wing to Jake, Jake moving fats through his triptronic semi auto gearbox, a blurr of skill, sweeping in with his left foot into the lower echelons of the Groves net. Get in! Luca, finding his feet, causing confusion to the Groves midfield with his power and speed looped a long shot on target to be swept away by the quick reactions of the Groves goalie. Otto wanting some himself, big run down the Groves left wing quickly dealt with again by the Groves defence team. No10 swept in to pick Daniels pocket who had no chance of saving this cannonball.

4/4 - G=Otto, D= Philip & Jake, F = Daniel & Seb
Sunshine on our backs, coaches coats off time for the final round. Philip attacked from midfield early on to be taken down by a crunching tackle putting him down to the unforgiving surface. Back on his feet assisted by Daniel a big looping shot just wide of he Groves goal. Seb once again came alive in the last 10, harrying and pressing the Groves defence. Chaos ruled with Meteors swapping positions continually to try and outwit the Groves team. No4 screeching through to get goal number 2 for Groves, further attempts from No10, No11 etc tested Otto’s goalkeeping skills on 3 occasions, excellent saves. Jake fast as ever couldn’t burst through being halted by more solid defending.
Thanks to the Andy’s for their continued patience and coaching. Well done boys, brilliant teamwork.
