A Gritty Performance
Win secured against local rivals
Report by Player Manager Danny Young
Following reports that the oppo could only muster 10 players, we decided pre match to even the sides up and only take a squad of 11, with the intention of having 1 sub to rotate. That turned out to be mind games and they turned up with 12 leaving us with the bare bones and them a spare player!
We had to soak up bit of early pressure but nothing that troubled our able stand in GK, Aaron. Looking increasingly dangerous on the break, we broke the deadlock 10 mins in with a smart finish from Harry Hampshire into the roof of the net. We doubled our lead shortly after as Danny Burns latched on to a nice through ball from Phil and finished left footed into the corner. There were murmurs that their GK could have done better but they all count! 2-0 it finished at HT but it should have been 4. Aaron virtually untroubled at the other end.
Wasps come out quickly in the second half and quickly made use of the glaring sun now blinding the Hoylake defence. An early snap shot was palmed away for a corner after a smart dive to Aaron’s left. They had the better of the play without really threatening but we always looked like scoring on the break.
Then came the moment we thought might have turned the game. Their striker broke our lines but looked off balance and hoping for a corner at best when Aaron cleaned him out good and proper. A penalty was awarded and was promptly dispatched to level at 2-1. The pressure built and they created a few more chances but Aaron was up to the task. The ref then gave a dubious free kick, 20 yards from goal after a the faintest of contact from Danny Young. Their striker went goal keeper’s side and wrong footed our stopper to draw level at 2-2.
A past Hoylake side would have crumbled but not this one! With 6 minutes to go, we weren’t settling for a point. Their player foolishly tried to nip ahead of Harry to win the ball in midfield, but after a smart turn, the space opened up for him to drive towards goal on the left flank. A shimmy and a powerful toe poke later and we were back in front! The joy from the Hoylake penalty area could be heard for miles around as Aaron screamed “Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!!!”
The move of the game shortly followed culminating in a cheeky lob from Danny Burns to seal the win and break Wasps hearts. The final whistle blew at 4-2 and capped of our first win.
