Amazingly with only 6 players the Meteors had their best game of the season so far, keeping the score close for the majority of the game before running out of steam, allowing Vauxhall to take advantage of a superior size squad with a flurry of goals at the end to make it 9 – 4 to the home side.
A big thank you must go the Vauxhall manager who coached and refereed the game in the most appropriate manner for this age group, never forgetting that the game is all about the kid’s, - THEIR enjoyment and development, allowing mistakes and giving EVERY player on both sides the opportunity to play and enjoy themselves, regardless of ability.
We rotated a lot of player’s positions after each quarter to ensure, as always, that most of the players get to experience the different positions on the pitch and that they learn the different techniques that different positions dictate.
The 1st quarter gave us an uphill task as we went down 3-0 despite the valiant defending of Lukas and Louie. After the first quarter rotation we started the 2nd quarter on top and it wasn’t long before the pressure paid off with 2 goals in quick succession first from Louis’ shot and then Cameron’s amazing dribble through the heart of Vauxhall’s midfield and defence before scoring the first of his 2 goals. It was a quarter full of promise as Hoylake dominated with the like of Daniel showing great skill, beating Vauxhall’s midfield in the wide areas.
The 3rd quarter started hopefully with a great shot from Lewis going just wide to equal the score but before long Vauxhall had crept ahead 4 -2. Our Meteors never gave up and Cameron pulled it back to 3 – 4 and the game was getting really exciting.
A fine overall 2nd half performance from Vauxhalls only girl put paid to Hoylake’s hopes as the talented youngster took hold of the game with her skills and impressive shooting, firing in several goals from long range to make it 6-3 as the game gradually slipped out of Hoylake’s hands.
An entertaining game ended with our kids shattered and a win for Vauxhall but not before an incredibly determined and energetic Josh forced his way through the Vauxhall defence to fire home his first ever goal. An emotional dad serving as a timely reminder as to why the score-line at this age should always be irrelevant.
