Vauxhall Astras 1 AC Hoylake Comets 1
MOM – Mathew
Squad – Alex, Bill, Josh, Jay, Sam S, Sam B, Ben, Mathew
Another good display for the Comets who battled hard as usual to come back from a goal down to draw 1 – 1. Playing at Vauxhalls on the Astra turf made for a very fast and tiring game with the added early morning sunshine and hot temperatures. Only 8 players travelled away, so there was lots of playing time for all players, even utilising rolling subs when players started blowing!!!
The first quarter saw they Astras take the lead. A goal bound shot was brilliantly stopped by Jay who flung himself to the ball. Unfortunately for the Comets his block rolled to the opposition striker who smashed the ball home. The Astras dominated proceedings but Mathew Welding in midfield worked well up and down. He was supported well by Josh who has not played much recently but made a fine contribution throughout the match after taking a heavy knock early on.
The second quarter and the lads upped the tempo and did not let the Astras settle and play their usual strong passing game. As a result of the Comets pressure, the game was played more in the Astras half. From one of the attacks, the players forced a corner which resulted in a goal. Bill took form the right, his cross was met by Ben, whose shot glanced off his foot onto Sam B who reacted just in time to force the ball over. The game then turned into a midfield battle with good works from Sam Stot who is maturing into a good footballer. He is now trying to look for, and pass to, fellow players whilst running with the ball at pace (He is quick!!!). Bill had one of his usual strong games, the opposition coach voted him MOM.
The next two quarter saw the Comets have more of the ball and stop the Vauxhalls from passing. Jay who was voted last week’s MOM carried on from where he left off and even had a smile on his face!!! Both sides had speculative efforts but neither keeper was forced into any real saves.
Mathew Welding winning MOM had a very good competitive game and if he played in defence or attack was able to influence the proceedings. His speed and strength in the tackle, and the ability to dribble the ball out is getting stronger and stronger. The lads travel back to Vauxhalls again this weekend playing the other Vauxhall side. Hopefully we will have a full complement to choose from and can aim for a victory!!!

Vauxhall Zafiras 1 AC Hoylake Comets 0
MOM – Ben
Squad – Ollie, Bill, Josh, Jay, Sam S, Samuel D, Ben, Mathew, Dan
A disappointing day for the Comets who travelled to Vauxhalls with a strong squad anticipating better things. Throughout the game the Comets never really got going. A spirited fourth quarter but the Comets were definitely lacking that cutting edge!! The first two quarters were comfortable for the Comets as the Zafiras never really threatened the Comets’ goal. Throughout the game the Comets never got the passing game which had improved lately. Players were guilty of holding the ball for too long. The third quarter saw a defensive mix up at the back leaving two attackers behind our defence. The Zafiras’ long ball over the top left us exposed and the Zafiras’ striker shot the ball past Mathew who had little opportunity. The frustration carried on for the Comets who harried and carried without much conviction.
So one nil down with the last quarter the boys finally started hustling the Zafiras and really dominated the match and kept them in their own half. The nearest the boys came to a goal was when Mathew moved the ball up the right and crossed to Ben who narrowly shot wide. The best chance came to Zafiras again after a repeat of our suicidal defending left two players unmarked up front. Fortunately Josh in goal put pressure on the striker causing him to miss wide.
The Comets were very disappointed at the end of the game, although they had not played well, they had created a lot more chances than the Zafiras. Over the course of the match Josh had headed the ball just over and a couple of good shots on target, Samuel had a shot narrowly wide, Bill had a couple of long range efforts which the keeper (very good!!) saved comfortably. Ben had a couple of efforts with the one in the fourth shaving the post and Mathew hit the side netting.
Ben received Mom for his good goalkeeping and his efforts in goal although there was not a lot between any of the players.
A Three week break for the Comets now with Easter and the tour to Barcelona. A good time for the Comets to have a break after some very impressive results over the last two months. Time to forget this one and look forward to three remaining fixtures plus a couple of tournaments in the warmer weather (we hope)!!!

AC Hoylake Comets 0 West Kirby Wasps Blue 1
MOM – Jay
Squad – Alex, Ollie, Bill, Dan, Sam Stot, Samuel Davies, Ben, Jay
First and foremost the Comets played the best game of football they have ever produced. A late winner from the Wasps ended the five match unbeaten run in this pulsating tie. The Comets hit the woodwork, had 3 one on ones and made their keeper work on a couple more occasions. Yes, the Panthers had their chances but none as clear cut as ours.
The first quarter was probably the poorest for the Comets who were great without the ball but could not keep it. The pressure from the Wasps was relentless but they never made our keeper work. The Comets dogged defensive work was impressive but we just could not keep hold of the ball.
The second quarter was like watching the Dutch side of the 70’s playing total football!!!! Slight exaggeration but after the improvement of the players in the last 3 months you would understand my comment. The emphasis on our team at the moment is about the wide players keeping the shape so a defender, attacker and forward always have an out ball. Every player on the pitch played with their head up. It did not matter if it was Ollie or Jay at the back, they could control the ball and play a pass out wide. Bill in the middle could always play to either Sam D or Sam Stot. They then could attack out wide where there was more space. In this quarter the lads pinned the Wasps back for the entire quarter. Sam D hit the post, Bill went close from a couple of long range efforts, Ben had 3 good opportunities. The usual battling spirit was used to win the ball and then the passing and moving with the ball made the quarter a joy to watch.
The third quarter was another strong one for the Comets who again dominated proceedings. The Wasps did have more of the ball but chances were at a premium with some good end to end attacking displays from both teams. A long range effort from Ollie and some impressive runs from Sam Stot on the left caused the Wasps continual problems. Bill had a very strong game and his vision for a pass is improving game by game.
The fourth quarter saw the Comets come under more pressure for long periods. The shape was slightly lost as the boys were pinned back. Jay was playing upfront and had a great quarter. He manufactured a chance for himself which the keeper just stopped crossing the line at the second chance. But there was going to be a sting in the tail (pardon the pun), good work from the Wasps saw them create an overlap which they scored from with minutes to go. Gutted but that’s football……
The game was terrific for both sets of players and supporters, we might go on about the result but the way the lads played in the second quarter was fantastic. The passing and interchange was a joy to watch after so many weeks of encouraging the boys to play. Jay was voted MOM although I could have picked 8!!! He raised his game today and now needs to keep up that level of commitment. His challenging and holding the ball up whilst up front was first class, as were his effort throughout the game.
