AC Hoylake Meteors 3 - 1 West Kirby Panthers
Meteors team:
Joseph W

The Meteors stormed out of the blocks to a winning start in the pre-season Friendly against West Kirby Panthers at our new home ground on Acres Road.
The boys showed a solid performance in the first quarter with lots of passing and movement that we had practised in training. Strong tackles at the back from Lewis, Matthew and Joseph ensured that Alex could record a clean sheet, having to make just one save. Callum and Frankie worked hard in midfield moving the ball quickly to Will and Sam up front.
The second quarter was a goal fest. West Kirby took the lead early on with a superb strike from midway into our half, a rocket of a shot that no keeper could have stopped. But we showed our mettle and more fantastic displays of pass and move from Callum and Frankie resulted in the first goal of the season for Man of the Match Callum Tully. Well deserved after a tireless display. Francis had a couple of opportunities as did Sam with some great runs up both wings. The most important thing was that we never let our heads go down and battled back and finished the quarter 2-1 up after an unfortunate own goal by the Panthers.
Although no more goals came in the third quarter we had lots of chances, with Will blasting one over the bar and another which the keeper did well to save. Sam took the goalkeepers gloves and kept an important clean sheet. Matthew worked hard in midfield and Reuben and Finlay did well in defence, making some important challenges to ensure we began the final quarter in front.
The fourth quarter was a close fought affair with West Kirby pushing forward looking for the equaliser but Lewis in midfield made some strong challenges that helped make quick transitions from defence to attack. Joseph took the Goal keepers gloves and commanded his area well, getting down bravely, taking the ball from their feet on a number of occasions, an outstanding goalkeeping display. Midway through the quarter Sam and Will combined well upfront and found themselves two against one, Sam laid the ball off brilliantly for Will to blast past the keeper and seal a well earned victory.
This performance was a brilliant start to the new season and we all agreed that we not only passed the ball well but created chances and had lots of shots on goal and this meant that even after going behind we could fight back and score the goals that won the match. Well done Meteors, let’s keep this up for the rest of the season.

Meteors team:

The Meteors have really started the season on a high with some great football and a determination that sees them battle to the very end of every game.
The first quarter showed promise with a fantastic goalkeeping display from Joseph W who produced a string of magnificent saves, keeping the Heygarth attack at bay. We had a couple of breaks; Callum almost finding the top right hand corner with a beautifully taken shot that whistled over the bar. Matthew held the defensive line, moving the ball out to supply Sam our dynamo in midfield. Alex F showed how much he has progressed over the last few months with a great defensive game; blocking, closing down and tracking their forward line brilliantly. We went in 0-0, confident that we could push on in the second quarter.
After the break Reuben showed good movement through the middle with Sam and Callum linking up well in the final third. We had really started to dominate when the ball broke to Alex; with a darting run from defence he laid the ball into the path of Callum who calmly placed his shot low to the keeper’s right and reeled away scoring his second goal of the season. The boys did well to keep their focus and Joseph W held his nerve in goal to keep the score line 1-0 at half time.
In the third quarter we again looked sharp and Monty put some long ranging throws into the Heygarth half as we looked to increase our lead. Heygarth drew level with an unlucky deflection, but we kept our focus and didn’t let our heads go down. Man of the match Sam Mealor made some blistering runs down the right hand side and we were creating plenty of chances before Heygarth broke away again and took the lead. We kept our spirits up and were unlucky not to draw level when Sam hit the post late on in the quarter.
The fourth quarter was a magnificent display of grit and determination as our lack of substitutes began to show. Joseph PF and Alex showed good positioning and movement and Joseph W’s long kicks were putting the Heygarth defence in trouble. Our tired legs kept on going but Heygarth extended their lead. We quickly came back at them as Matthew moved into midfield and made some important challenges to hold the ball up, feeding Sam and Callum’s marauding runs on the wings. Opportunity knocked for Reuben who grabbed his chance and slotted home. The comeback looked on. Unfortunately, Heygarth hit back twice more late on leaving the final score 5-2.
All in all it was a fantastic display. The score line does not reflect what was a very tight game with some excellent football played by both teams and Joseph W had another great game, pulling off save after save. We can take a lot of positives into the next match and we can really make an impact this season. We were very proud of the way the boys reacted to the setbacks with some great shows of supportive teamwork after the own goal. That positive attitude will be the difference for us and we are confident that the penetration and perseverance we have shown so far this season will pay off.
Unlucky boys, but the football you played and the spirit you showed counts more than the final result.

With almost a full strength squad the Meteors were able to show how much they have improved over the past 12 months against a very good Wasps side.
Hoylake began well having the lion’s share of possession; Sam and Callum making powerful runs up both flanks putting pressure on the Wasps early on. Our defensive line up; Frankie, Lewis and Alex MJ kept the Wasps at bay, all three lads holding their positions well, covering all the space at the back and working hard to move the ball quickly into midfield. Alex MJ especially made some probing forward runs. Keeping possession will become a very important part of our game as the season develops. Our first goal came straight off the training ground with a well worked corner, Will picking out Sam hovering with intent in front of goal who brought the ball down with his first touch and sent a rocket into the top of the net with his second.
After the break Wasps upped their game and Finlay, taking over from Joseph W in goal, had to make a string of fine saves to keep out the Wasps forward line. Again we looked good in midfield, Will and Lewis working hard to get the ball up to Sam and Will but Wasps broke through and picked out their goal with a well placed shot that left Finlay with no chance. Again we didn’t let our heads go down. We kept plugging away and were unlucky not to grab another with chances from Sam and Callum that went just wide.
In the third quarter Monty played a blinder in goal, making some audacious saves; his probing kicks putting pressure on the Wasps. Frankie made a lot of important challenges and again the defensive line made sure that possession was not wasted. Alex F worked hard, playing the ball forward and Joseph W worked tirelessly in midfield and kept his cool after a particularly hard challenge. Midway through the quarter Lewis sent a rocket of a free kick which almost broke the net. 2-1 Hoylake and well deserved.
The fourth quarter was hard fought and Joseph PF showed his flair with some lovely touches and Sam again made his trademark penetrating runs deep into the Wasps half. Alex MJ was eager to keep possession working hard to win the ball on a number of occasions. We had to change things part way through as all the boys wanted to be part of the action so Alex MJ and Will, graciously stepped aside to allow Alex F and Joseph PF another shot but Wasps worked hard and despite Monty’s best efforts they managed to grab a late equaliser.
Another fantastic display and a great result that we can be proud of. Monty earned a well deserved Man of the Match with a wonderful display of goalkeeping, using his hands well. All across the park we have strong, versatile players, Frankie and Lewis show potential in both midfield and defence, using the ball effectively. Will’s killer instinct and good touch will certainly deliver goals this season.

Our first wet Saturday morning in October and another display of dogged determination from the Meteors.
The first quarter was an even contest with both teams creating good chances. Joseph W in goal commanded his area well and kept a vital clean sheet. He was helped by a great defensive display from Matthew, Lewis and Frankie; all three making important challenges and also moving the ball into midfield with great passes. Sam found himself some space on a couple of occasions but couldn’t quite convert the chances. Sam and Callum worked well in midfield with some good interlinking play and some testing balls into the Heswall area. 0-0 after the first 10 minutes although we were aware that Heswall had some good players.
Heswall were quick out of the blocks in the second quarter and went ahead through a well taken goal early on. Monty had a lot to do in goal as the shots rained in, he did well to keep on on the line midway through the quarter. Reuben and Joesph PF tried their best to keep the Heswall midfield at bay and again we created opportunities for Callum and Will but we couldn’t find that elusive first goal. Alex MJ found himself in space late on but his powerful shot just whistled wide of the post.
In the third quarter Monty continued his great display of goal keeping as the Meteors pressed for an opener. Alex MJ nearly made it but the ref, amid calls for goal-line technology, judged the keeper to have had both hands on the ball. Minutes later Lewis scrambled the ball home after a well taken corner. Unfortunately Heswall responded with some great passing and movement and a thunder bolt that left Monty with no chance so we went in to the final quarter 3-1 down.
Joseph W finished the game in goal and Frankie and Callum kept pushing in midfield with some mazy runs. Frankie couldn’t quite get his shot away after a great run from deep in his own half. Will and Lewis both showed some deft touches and turned on the ball well but Heswall had too much for us and took advantage of our pressing game to catch us twice on the counter attack. Late efforts from Sam and Callum were to no avail and we left with a score line that didn’t reflect this close encounter.
The meteors showed more improvement with their awareness at set pieces and the quality of their ball control. We again showed how we can keep our heads up and stay determined and motivated right until the final whistle. We create space well and the chances keep coming, on another day the result could have been quite different.

A great game which showed how well our movement and positioning has improved recently. With only 6 a-side this week we used the extra space well and the crowd enjoyed a great game of football.
The first quarter was end to end and we gave a well disciplined display to be proud of. Sam started in goal and gave a confident display, pulling off some great saves and long penetrating kicks to send the Callum the midfield dynamo away on some of his trademark runs. Ben used his pace and determination to break down the right side and will nearly got on the end of a cross but couldn’t quite stretch. Neston grabbed a couple of late goals which were deserved but we can be happy that we matched them for skill and determination.
The second quarter was another fine display as the sun came out and we started to stretch the Neston defence. Ben had a stint in goal and Sam moved into midfield. Frankie brought the ball out of defence a number of times and at last we got our reward after a looping corner from Will picked out Callum on the edge of the box who lobbed the keeper with a well taken goal. Neston grabbed another, beating Ben’s stretching dive to the right. We kept on pushing and Sam was unlucky not get one back after his effort went wide.
Frankie took his turn as keeper in the third quarter and managed to keep a clean sheet with help from Matthew and Sam in defence. Matthew marshalled the boys well at corners and showed great leadership at the back. Ben and Callum linked up well in midfield to feed Will. We had the lions share of possession this quarter but couldn’t quite turn it into goals.
The fourth quarter could have gone either way, Ben took his turn back in goal and his ranging goal kicks tested the Neston defence and it was from one of these that Sam found himself alone with only the keeper to beat. He calmly placed the ball low to the right to score his second goal of the season. Ben continued to send long passes towards Callum and Sam with Will ready to pounce on any balls into the middle but Neston were ablet o catch us on the break to grab a late fourth. Frankie almost grabbed a late consolation but the final score line didn’t reflect how close the game was.
All in all a fine display that shows we are beginning to gain an awareness of space and the importance of movement when we don’t have the ball. More of this next week please, it’s a pleasure to watch. Frankie takes the Man of the Match trophy for his work rate and excellent vision with some a fine display of pass and move.

The Meteors gave their best performance of the season against a very well organised Liscard side. Everybody worked tirelessly and we showed improvement right across the squad.
Liscard began brightly and showed some great movement off the ball, testing the Meteors defence. Reuben had a tremendous first quarter, covering the Liscard forward line and showed great discipline to not get drawn out of position. Callum and Joseph PF linked up well in midfield with some great one touch pass and move football that nearly broke the Liscard defence. Alex MJ had a lot of work to do in goal however as the strength and pace of the Liscard side created opportunities early on and despite a valiant dive from Alex MJ their determination paid off with a well taken goal. Meteors barely had chance to recover when they got a quick second but we really started to push on and almost got one back with a great through ball from Reuben to send Callum away with a great effort on goal. Will had a chance saved and it was a shame the quarter had to come to an end as we finished on a high.
The meteors started with a pressing game that kept the Liscard side quiet for long periods. Matthew came in to defence and Sam took on the forward role as we looked to pull one back. More great dives from Alex and some strong challenges from Frankie helped to keep an important clean sheet in the second quarter; he showed his determination to bring the ball out of defence with some great runs and lovely through balls to Callum and Joseph PF in midfield. Matthew and Zack held the defence firm and made sure possession wasn’t wasted, picking out passes to send the midfield away and Sam almost took advantage but was unlucky to have his shot go wide.
In the third quarter Monty stepped up to the plate and pulled on the goalie gloves. He had a hard time as Liscard came at us early and drove a rocket into the top corner that no keeper could have stopped. We still kept our heads up and Reuben again worked hard making some great challenges and moving the ball out of defence comfortably, by far his best display this season. Unfortunately another strike by Liscard doubled their lead and Sam stepped into the breach as Monty took a knock. As the quarter progressed we held our nerve andWill had a couple of chances that whistled past the post.
A hard fought fourth quarter showed above all how well we have progressed this year and the boys were enjoying their football so much it was a shame it had to end. Sam kept his concentration and was quick to get to the ball a number of times. Frankie made some mazy runs deep into the Liscard half and almost made a goal for himself but the ball just ran away from him at the last. Will kept his position well, not getting drawn away and again had chances to grab a consolation goal. Despite their best efforts Liscard grabbed a late goal but the boys finished with smiles on their faces. They knew they had played their socks off again.
Great work rate and the passing and movement is really starting to improve. Reuben played a blinder but for his display of discipline up front, Will got Man of the Match though the whole team deserve a trophy after this game. Well done boys.

Another great game of football from the Meteors. We are improving with every game and the boys can be very proud of themselves after this display.
It was a cold frosty morning and the Meteors took some time to warm up. Ridgewood attacked early on and our defence held tight and Zack made some important early challenges. We struggled to keep possession at times but Oliver and Callum in midfield were able to make some driving runs and tried hard to carve open the Ridgewood defence. We looked very strong when defending corners and played the ball out of defence, Frankie and Zack make some charging runs up field but Ridgewood took the lead late into the quarter after the ball fell kindly as we tried desperately to clear the lines. Alex MJ was unlucky not to get a hand to the ball as it rolled over the line
We were beginning to warm up for the second quarter and Joseph PF made some great challenges in defence and showed confidence with the ball, creating space with a well controlled turn. Monty worked back and forth, trying to link up play between midfield and attack as we pressed hard to regain our momentum. Callum showed why he has scored so many goals this season with some great runs off the ball and was unlucky not to break away after a through ball from Oliver. Zack and Frankie continued to contain the Ridgewood defence and we kept a clean sheet for the second quarter.
By the third quarter we were well into our stride and began to move the ball into the Ridgewood half with confidence. Will and Oliver linked up well to try to create an opening. Alex MJ moved into attack as Joseph W came back into goal for the first time this year and made some important stops, showing what an asset he is to us. Alex F also showed how much he has improved this season, especially in his awareness of space and getting into the right positions to contain the opposition. A fantastic quarter where we always looked like scoring. Alex MJ created a fantastic opportunity with a lovely move down the right hand touchline, taking a pass from Callum and finding Oliver on the edge of the box but the shot just clipped the crossbar. We finished the quarter full of confidence and there was a real buzz running through the team.
We stepped up the gears again in the fourth quarter, Alex F again showing how much he has improved, making some strong challenges and passing the ball out of defence with accuracy. Frankie and Zack worked well at letting each other push up the field, one covering the other at the back and they both made some impressive runs up field. We had lots of opportunities and finally got our reward. Joseph W hoofed the ball up field from the goal kick and Alex MJ took the ball on a mazy run from the half way line to round the keeper and slot home. We kept on pressing and were unlucky not to take more from the game but Ridgewood are a good team and a draw was a good result for us.
Great team spirit and we played like a team who know how to play together. Alex F got a well deserved man of the match for a commanding display at the back but all the boys deserved it today.

The score line doesn’t reflect what was a very good game from the Meteors against a confident and able Eastham Ranger side
We set out in the first quarter with great intent. We held our own at the back, Frankie, Matthew and Alex F closed down well. We kept Eastham to a couple of shots from outside the area and Alex MJ pulled off the save of the season so far, at full stretch to keep a shot destined for the top corner. Zak and Callum linked up well in midfield and we are starting to show some good passing and movement to move the ball forward.
The second quarter was more of the same, Alex MJ kept a clean sheet and commanded the area well. Our defence are very tight and are becoming very well organised, talking to each other and not getting drawn out of position too often. Joseph PF played well in midfield, linking up with Frankie in defence and finding space to pass into. Sam Mealor came on in midfield and linked up well with Callum who was unlucky not to get on the score sheet with some very well timed runs into the box. We looked very solid and began to open their defence up.
Sam Mealor took over in goal for the 3rd quarter and made some very important saves. He is becoming very aware of his responsibilities in goal, coming out quickly to smother the ball. Alex MJ moved up front and showed what an asset he is, very solid in his runs and linking up well with defence and attack. Zak and Frankie are very comfortable at bringing the ball out of defence, and are aware of holding position to let the other get forward – Lampard and Gerrard could learn a thing or two form them the way they played today. Callum Tully again played well and keeps getting himself into the right places, if only the ball would fall kindly for him.
In the 4th quarter they turned on the pressure and the difference was the technical ability of one or two of their players. The best move of the game was from the Meteors. Sam threw the ball in from deep in our half, Alex MJ flicked on wth a lovely header to Joseph W who lobbed the ball over to Callum. Callum took it down nicely and moved forward with the ball into space, threaded a little diagonal ball to Zak, who played a quick ball to Will who again tried to find Callums well timed run in to the box but just over hit the pass. A great piece of football that shows just how well we can play.
An unfortunate result for what was probably performance of the season. We just need to keep getting the ball into advanced positions and get into the danger area in front of goal and we will score soon.
Keep it up boys,

Willaston are another team that are new to the league and we gave them a really good game.
Our overall team performance today was excellent and we kept them at bay until the 4th quarter where they caught us on the break.
Until that point we had the lions share of possession, and were very unlucky not to score 3 or 4 in what was a great match for the players and spectators alike. We are really starting to sow an awareness of space on the pitch and finding some lovely passing and movement that was lacking in our game at the start of the season.
The boys are maturing into a well disciplined side who just need a little bit of luck to start scoring. Three men of the match this time but as ever the whole team deserve praise for their performance.

All credit to Young Lions who gave us a really good game. Thanks to their coaches for some very positive feedback after the game, commending us on our organisation and discipline and said we were one of the best teams they have played in this league so far.
We have started to get into gear from the kick off in games now and we gave as good as we got, matching them in defence. We tried four at the back today which allowed Frankie and Joseph PF to get forward up the wings on the break. Matthew and Alex F are disciplined enough to stay back at the right times and this meant we could attempt to dominate the midfield. Alex MJ controlled the centre of the park and showed a great first touch on numerous occasions. Joseph W had a good stint in goal and kept an important clean sheet.
2nd quarter and Sam Mealor took over in goal, making some important saves and using his big kicks to great effect. We started to find areas in the danger zone in front of their goal more and more and Oliver and Alex MJ both had opportunities to score, just denied by a fine display by the Young Lions keeper. Our defence are starting to use the space behind midfield well, just try not to get dragged towards the ball too often lads.
3rd quarter and we were caught on the break but up until that point we were giving as good as we got from a very talented Young Lions side. Matthew almost snatched an equaliser after some great work down the right side from Callum and Oliver. Oliver drove in a low cross which passed across the goal mouth and Matthew just put it wide of the back post.
4th quarter was difficult as Young Lions pushed for more and Alex F took over in goal and bravely stopped a number of attacks, getting his hands to the ball well. Callum, Sam and Alex MJ kept on pushing and Matthew is starting to have the confidence to get forward at the right times.
A fantastic display that showed just how far we have come this season. The defence are very tight and are starting to get forward when the opportunity arises meaning we have more bodies forward when we attack. The midfield and attack are playing some lovely football, lots of triangles and we are closer and closer to recording our first victory I’m sure
Well played boys, keep our heads held high and take the positives from a really good game of football.

Second win on the bounce for the Meteors as all the hard work this season is beginning to pay dividends for us. A shame for Heswall as they played well but every one of the boys worked hard today and showed how well they can play.
The 1st quarter was a slow starter with both teams working hard - Heswall playing against the hill. Callum and Oliver worked the wings well and pushed forward at every opportunity. The Heswall team had some very strong players and Matthew G and Alex F did well to stop their attacks, Joseph W again did well in goal and made some important saves early on. But Will broke the deadlock just before the end of the quarter with an audacious effort from outside teh area that soared into the top corner.
2nd quarter Heswall exploded out of the blocks, bursting through from the kick off and left Sam with little chance in goal. But we didn’t let our confidence be knocked and went straight back at them. Joseph W showed great determination to win the ball and linked up well with Alex MJ in midfield. Soon we regained our lead after a great run from Callum resulted in a well taken goal. Their keeper made some important saves as we continued to build in confidence and kept the pressure on.
3rd quarter and we were really flying. The rain stopped and we kept on pushing forward in numbers. Our new formation is beginning to look useful, with the midfield linking up between defence and attack. We kept attacking in waves. Zacks mazy runs split their defence time and again and paid off with a great solo goal. Then the flood gates opened. Wills corners were looking dangerous all the game and Matthew pounced to make it 4. Then Zack seized his opportunity and ran half the length of the pitch to slide into a defensive mix up and got his brace and our 5th. Sam got onto the score sheet with two well taken goals, one after pouncing on a shot pass from the keeper and driving it home into the bottom corner away from the keeper. The second after a well controlled pass from Frankie, he slotted home with cool aplomb. Frankie nearly got his first of the season - latching onto another penetrating corner from Will but his shot was well saved by the keeper.
4th quarter and we showed great resilience as Heswall tried to get back into the game, working hard to break us down but Callum and Alex MJ at the back protected Oliver in the goal well. Our heads were up and Will got his hat trick, linking up Zack in midfield to fire home from close range.
Credit to Heswall for not giving up and playing to the end and credit to the Meteors for showing respect to the Heswall team. We know what it feels like to concede heavily and won with dignity.
Well played boys, we had an all round great performance today and the football we have been playing for the past few months has promised great things and finally we got the bit of luck we needed. Lets keep this up next week and finish the season on a high.
